More Travels with Allen
As I travelled around this month, I realized how this area has so many accomplished independent business entrepreneurs. We’re so fortunate to be able to reap the benefits of their hard work, good service and product.
Uncle Mike’s Homemade Ice Cream is one of those “independents.” Have you ever tasted their ice cream? Located in the heart of Warminster, on York Road, Uncle Mike’s serves premium homemade ice cream and sorbet that has won wide acclaim. You can stop in for ice cream sandwiches, take home a specially prepared cake or pie and sit for a bit slurping on a delicious ice cream cone. And you can do it all in Pennsylvania’s #1 Ice Cream Parlor! Imagine right in our reading area, you can visit and enjoy the Best Ice Cream Parlor in Pennsylvania… parking is aplenty and service is friendly. Just stop in for a scoop or two, or three and you’ll be able to say you were there at Uncle Mike’s. When you’re there, check out their old truck that sits in the parking lot. It’s quite a destination now!!!
The Newtown Farmer’s Market is celebrating a BIG anniversary this month. For 20 years-plus, this fun market has served the area with fresh produce, home-baked goods, prime meats and poultry, seafood, cheeses and more… All supplied by independent farmers, businessmen, etc.
I stopped in the Market recently and visited with Elam Riehl and his wife, Martha. Elam brings us a wide variety of baked goods including the best donuts around. He was busy re-stocking his shelves and commanding quite a committed workforce! He had the help of his five children, ranging in ages 15 years to 3 years. I mentioned to Martha that it was quite a staff to manage and that I didn’t see a gray hair on her head!!!
The Market was bustling this day and I stopped for some falafel at King of Falafel. Again, I saw parents and children working behind the counter serving up some of the best falafel in the area. It definitely had a Middle Eastern kick!!! Linda and I enjoyed an unplanned lunch with some “Falafel A-Go-Go” in the car
Shoppers were going from booth to booth snapping up fresh vegetables and farm bred meats and poultry… and yes, whole families were working side-by-side. It was a pleasure to see. I gotta mention the pretzels… filled with different fillings, the warm aroma wafted through the Market.
If you haven’t checked out the Newtown Farmer’s Market yet, it’s definitely worth a visit. It might become a regular stop in your shopping routine. And they’re planning some special events for their anniversary, so stay tuned to our pages for what’s happening in this go-to market.
Lower Bucks Hospital just got better. They opened a Community Health Center located inside the hospital. The Center will provide urgent care services when what you’re dealing with is not a life threatening emergency, but still needs attention. Staffed by experienced physicians and clinicians who provide a full range of medical services from toddlers to seniors, this is a terrific service to the community. It’s close to home and close to the hospital. Should give anyone who goes there a sense of relief to know such medical attention is so conveniently available. And it can cost less than an emergency room visit. Even better, they’re going to offer discounted pricing to patients without insurance. Now that’s something that reflects their commitment to serving the community! I say welcome to the Lower Bucks Hospital Community Health Center!
Grab & Go…. That’s what you can do now when you go to Don Giovanni’s Classic Bakery on Street Road in Feasterville. I stopped by on our Editor’s recommendation and grabbed two of their tasty bagels and Danish one early morning. The coffee was already brewed and steamy, just the way I like it. Debbie S., the owner, is creating quite a meeting place for breakfast-on-the-road clients. This newest extension of the bakery is open and almost ready for its full unveiling. So stay tuned for its Grand Opening. In the meantime, you can Grab & Go from the full array of breakfast goodies in the original bakery space. Sandwiches, Danish, morning brew and a new Breakfast Pizza…. What could be bad? Don Giovanni only serves the tastiest of the tasty! Trust me, I should know. Debbie is great. Just like my Mom when she was alive, feeds me every time she sees me.
So, once again, I travel forth gathering new info for our October issue. I feel pumpkins and scarecrows in my future. Check back in a few weeks and let’s see if I’m right. For now, enjoy September. It’s Fall, maybe the rain will stop!!!
