More Travels with Allen

In last month’s “Travels With Allen” I said that Mealy’s Furniture was going out of business. That was only partially correct. We have learned that the chain is owned by a Regency Furniture in Maryland, and according to the firm’s president, Mark Stuart, some of their locations will reopen as Regency Furniture. They are restructuring their business and hope to expand along the Eastern Seaboard under the Regency name. Looks like the area might not be losing a moderate furniture store. Stay tuned.

Last month I also wrote about Warrington’s BurgerIM. I haven’t changed my mind about their variety of hamburgers … from salmon to liver, etc. They are the best and I urged our readers to head to their location in the Valley Square Shopping Center. I haven’t changed my mind. They are TOPS.

But since last month, my wife, our trusty little editor, notified me that IM in Hebrew means plural …like book(s). So, my interest peaked, I went on line and did come investigating. They are indeed an Israeli corporation and they are rapidly expanding worldwide. Their rate of growth, well earned I might add, has been spectacular. Most of our friends who we have recommended this eatery to have become “bee backs.”

Now for the weird. If you like crab cakes head on over to Four Seasons Pizza on Philmont Avenue in Lower Moreland. Am I recommending a Pizza/ Italian place for crabcakes? You bet. And, here is another surprise, I want to recommend House of Kosher on Bustleton Avenue in the far Northeast for pizza and sushi. This recommendation may surprise you, but once there you will thank me.

Finally, on the subject of surprises, you should head on over to both Burger King and Arby’s. They both offer an incredible assortment of tasty items for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the cheap! Fast food with surprising menus.

For many of our readers this is insurance time of the year. I urge you to visit Ron Hyman at Insurance Shops on Bustleton Avenue in Feasterville. He is incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated and a great help. He saved Linda and me hundreds of dollars (honest)a month when he reviewed our insurance. Forget the ads on TV. Ron represents just about all of the major companies and can identify what’s best for you. He saved us on homeowners, health, auto, renters and more.

Trust me, he has the “Herman Five Star Approval” rating. Now, during the enrollment period for Medicare, Medicaid and “Mediyoyo,” it is more urgent than ever to contact him. So many of our neighbors took my advice and are thrilled with their expanded coverage and savings. But hurry, time is of the essence.

Alessio’s Seafood Grille is an Italian restaurant on York Road just north of the Valley Square Shopping Center in Warrington. This former gas station (that’s why the bathrooms are outside the building)is no secret. It is usually crowded. We normally go an hour before the mob. Their menu, especially if you like seafood, is phenomenal. Their menu is really creative and enormous. Their daily specials are always marvelous. Everything we have ordered there has been great. We have never been disappointed and definitely suggest a visit.

Before I forget, holiday season is synonymous toy trains. We have a great train store, Joe’s Train Station, located on County Line Road in Hatboro and another one on Mill Street in Bristol called Trainpops Attic. If you have trains of your own, this might be the time to make sure everything is in operable condition before you end up disappointed. Both owners, Brian at Trainpops Attic and Doug at Joe’s Train Station, are eager to assist.

Also, the Abington Lines Model Railroad Club on Second Street has many open days for you to see their spectacular collection and layout in December and January. Call 215-598-7720 for further information. The Chelten Hills Club, located on York Road in Elkins Park, also has a large number of display days. They can be reached at 215-635-9747 for more information. Last, but certainly not least, is the Rockledge Model Railroad in, you guessed it, Rockledge. This 3000 square foot HO layout is relatively new and growing very quickly. All welcome new members and donations.

If you’re homebound and can’t get out to see your physician, you might give MultiCare a call. A relatively new medical service, and pretty unique to our area, these folks serve the homebound. It makes for a more relaxed and comfortable medical visit for those who need it and it’s covered by most insurances. I spoke with the Practice Administrator, and he reminded me how valuable it is to be able to get the appropriate Primary Care when you need it. If you’re unable to travel to a doctor’s office, MultiCare can make sure you get the help as required… in the comfort of your own home. Check them out and see if this service could make your life easier and the life of those you love healthier and more comfortable.

What a change! After months of being closed for remodeling (and a rebranding, new logo, etc.), the landmark store, Beautyland, at Gregg Street and Krewstown Road in Northeast Philadelphia, has reopened with a fresh, new, contemporary ’boutique’ look, gorgeously redesigned. And they still are a destination for excellent values on cosmetics and health and beauty products and sundry items. Linda swears that she can ONLY get her special moisturizer at Beautyland. Nobody else carries it…nowhere, no how, no place… just Beautyland!

Congratulations to Dr. Steven Allen, and the Center for Advanced Vein Therapy in Huntingdon Valley. They’ve just been granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission in both Vein Center (in the area of superficial Venous Treatment and Management) and Vascular Testing (in the area of Peripheral Venous Testing. This speaks to their commitment to quality patient care in both vein treatment and management of vascular testing. If you’re affected by varicose veins, or suspect it might be an issue, Dr. Allen and his crew can help alleviate those concerns and improve your condition. I never understood exactly how the shape or condition of our veins can point to underlying health concerns. The Center for Advanced Vein Therapy can help unmask those problems. So, like I say every month, that’s it for now. It’s November and I’m going shopping for some turkey. I love shopping in a market. (Not so my editor in chief, especially if I’m with her!!!)
