Out & About

Get thee to The General quick!
I could stop there, IF you would get
to The General quick!!!

My buddy and I checked out this Southampton restaurant last minute. It sounded like a good idea originally. Turned out it was a fantastic idea!

One of the older buildings on Street Road, The General has had some gentle updates through the years. Most recently they’ve added an all-season deck, where you can dine rain or shine… and it appears to be well-used. P.S. It’s available for catered parties.

We went on a Friday evening for Happy Hour and the special menu offered during those hours, 4pm-6pm. We were not disappointed. What fun! We were determined to sample as much as we could, and that we did! The Meatball Parm Casserole was served in a crock that held two hefty meatballs. Light and tasty, this could have served one person for dinner. We shared! We also ordered the Loaded Tater Tot dish with EVERYTHING. You need at least four people to devour this dish, maybe more. We also ordered a roasted Brussel Sprouts dish with feta cheese, cranberries and caramelized balsamic vinegar. WOW! Again, we shared, and this was just the start of what’s available on the special priced Happy Hour menu.

After consulting our congenial server, Joyce, we ordered onion rings, wings AND a hamburger. After all, we had to make sure our tasting was well-rounded and representative of the terrific bar menu offered! Joyce has been at The General for years. In fact her daughter was off at the table next to us, helping another group of diners. So, we trusted her recommendations.

We ordered our wings, some seasoned with Old Bay and some seasoned with Garlic and Parmesan cheese. Please DON’T ask which we preferred. We preferred them BOTH! The onion rings were crispy and not oily tasting…. Our hamburger was plump, served on a lightly toasted roll and cooked to perfection. Covered with mushrooms and onions, it hit the spot. (Maybe more than one spot!!!!)

Can you tell we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves? And yes, we went home with quite a few doggie bags.

A few things; the bathroom was IMMACULATE! Congratulations to the management of The General to be able to pull that off at a busy restaurant. Second, don’t be surprised or be put off when you have to walk through the busy bar area to enter a seated dining room. It’s just a few steps. There’s generous handicap access to the restaurant. That’s a good thing. And if you want to dine outside, there is direct access to the deck that has heaters available for those crisp Fall days. No need to enter through the restaurant. By the way, we understand it’s the talents of a husband and wife chef-team who works the kitchen feeding hungry diners. Our experience shows they do it well, VERY well.
Finally, there’s a very capable young man who assists the wait staff… he’s Eddie, the owner’s son. A great smile, and eager to please, you can tell he takes his responsibility seriously. His mom and dad should be proud!!

The General is open 7 days and they deliver. Each day has its own special offering, and remember they have an extensive Happy Hour menu Monday-Friday. We’ll need to revisit to check out the other dishes!!! P.S. We hear they’re celebrating Halloween in a BIG way!

We enjoyed. We recommend… Let us know what you find out when you go to The General. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
