Out & About with Linda – July 2025
This column is going to take a bit of turn this month.
Thought I’d share my excitement about a really neat product that’s REALLY relevant for the season. And then, of course, we’ll go “travelling” just a bit in our reading area…Not to worry!
Okay, I admit it. I’m one of those people who checks out HSN and QVC periodically. Yup! I find both entertaining, and often times appreciate what they’re selling. And yes, sometimes even bite the bullet and make a purchase. This is about a purchase I made on HSN and I’m spreading the word. no commission involved! LOL!!
Kitchen HQ-2 Pack Ice Cream Maker. Got it? It’s an easy-to-use ice cream maker that provides fun, entertainment, and dare I say, some level of nutrition. Nutrition, because there are no additives, no dyes involved in producing the best homemade ice cream. at least in this writer’s humble opinion. And it’s a gadget that even the youngest of children can use safely. Let me explain.
My love affair with the Kitchen HQ-2 Pack Ice Cream Maker started with the host instruction. Just 3 or 4 ingredients in a frozen container, push a button to churn and freeze. Easy-P-Z. Right? Right! I fell in love, hook, line and sinker. Placed my order and waited.
My package arrived; one container was pretty with strawberry decor and the other was plain white. A 2-pack meant I got TWO freezing containers/vessels. Ok, figured I’d give one away. Opened up the package, and threw the freezer piece in the freezer for the required time before using. About 24 hours. (PS. That unit is ALWAYS in the freezer now at the ready!)
Checked out the enclosed recipes and decided my first attempt would be a vanilla ice cream base. Rushed out to the market and picked up: sugar, whole milk, heavy whipping cream and Vanilla Bean Paste. You can find the paste in your market’s baking section, sort of hidden, and yes, it’s like real vanilla only VERY thick. You only need 1/3 C. sugar, a 1/2 cup of milk, cup of whipping cream and 2 tsp. Vanilla Bean Paste. That’s it! Nothing fake I love it!! Threw everything in the frozen vessel, pushed a button to start the churning and waited about 20 minutes for the creamiest confection to appear. I spooned it into the container provided with the pack- age and placed it in the freezer. I waited overnight for the “magic” to occur. WOW!!
One thing, don’t expect to take a spoonful of the completely frozen ice cream. it needs to soften a bit. It REALLY freezes hard. But, be patient, and once softened, it’s delish. Next batch I put chocolate sauce on the top and used a knife to run it through the vanilla ice cream. Did the same thing with peanut butter with another batch. Double delish!! Hey, I wasn’t done. Remember, I’m a Bubbie and this is definitely a “Bubbie thing!!”
So back to HSN. Did you hear me calling? I ordered ice cream makers for Yosef, Goldie AND, of course, 3-year old Suri. What fun we had!!! The freezer vessels arrived and went in the freezer immediately so they’d be ready for their visit. Mix-ins were prepared. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, cut up by Yosef. Chocolate syrup for Goldie. Sprinkles (or jimmies) for Suri. Crushed Oreo cookies, M&M’s and anything else their minds could think of.
Back a Bubbie’s for their overnight visit, (aka my house) each child selected their own ice cream maker. They had a choice of colors, after all I placed 3 orders, each one comprised of 2 freezer vessels. So, yes, I ordered extra But that’s what Bubbie’s and Grandparents do, right?!
Each child could mix their own ice cream base, even young Suri. We could spoon it in the container and add whatever mix’in was pre- ferred. Stick it in the freezer and wait. Need I say, we all had ice cream for breakfast?! And whatever was left, and there was ice cream left, they took home to share. P.S. Two days later I spoke to Goldie and Suri in the morning and guess who was enjoying ice cream at 8:30am? Yup!!! Even Mommy Deena!!! Remember, no additives, nothing fake. Almost as healthy as eating Breyers ice cream, which I believe is additive-free.
These gadgets are GREAT. I recommend them for any kitchen that’s looking to entertain and amaze. Young and old will enjoy and it’s SO easy. Add your ingredients and push a button. Stick it in the freezer and enjoy later. Of course, if you would prefer soft serve…. go for it. Freezing time can be reduced.
Kitchen HQ-2 Pack Ice Cream Maker at HSN. Check it out. It might appeal to your sense of adventure in the kitchen. It sure as heck satisfied the Herman crew and it still does almost every week!!! Enjoy!
And while we’re speaking of ice cream, I thought we’d visit Angy’s Cafe & Ice Cream Parlor on York Road in Warminster. Such a sweet getaway, Angy’s is known for its yummy ice cream selection AND its great food. Did you know it’s been voted to have the Best Hamburger in Bucks Mont?
We stopped in for ice cream recently and Wow! There were just two of us but we sampled six wonderful flavors. Banana, Strawberry, Death by Chocolate, Raspberry, Cherry Vanilla and Peanut Butter Fudge. I’m not too embarrassed to admit I ate my entire portion. My guest only ate half and tried to take the rest home.
The banana and strawberry were perfect especially if banana and strawberry are not your “thing.” Not too banana-y and not too
strawberry-y. And of course, death by chocolate was rich and creamy, and we lived to talk about it! LOL!! My choices were the re- maining three. And I can honestly say, I will be ordering these flavors again. The chunks of peanut butter cups took me over the top!
I don’t know who supplies their ice cream, but they definitely should be awarded some recognition for the product they provide. Creamy and yummy, I haven’t enjoyed ice cream like that, well, since I made my own ice cream!! Angy’s has a full range of options in- cluding sugar-free, dairy free and gluten free ice creams. You can get cones, waffles, sundaes, the full gamut of ice cream concoctions. Their prices are more than fair and their portions well, don’t be like me and consume a large cup in one sitting. Your waistline will show the consequences!!
We decided to make a return visit to check out their famous hamburger and some of the other goodies on their menu. And, boy, were they GOOD! Remember, the idea is to sample a range of offerings so here’s what we came up with.
The California Burger was perfection. Thick, juicy, tasty. I could not have made it any better. The award they got is well deserved for the burger. The Vegetable Quesadilla was wonderful. Loaded with veggies and hot cheese, it was served with a side of guacamole and sour cream. We ordered a Turkey & Orange Salad with a side of balsamic. Full with greens, feta cheese, orange and fresh turkey, it was portion enough for two hungry diners. And yes, it was FRESH turkey, not the usual deli turkey. BIG difference. We also ordered a side of home fries. Nice chunks of hand cut potato sauteed. Just how I like my potatoes. And finally, I ordered a tuna wrap. again, a sandwich that could be shared very easily.
Ice Cream or food? Right hand or left hand? Don’t choose go for both. Angy’s has it all. Quality food. An inviting menu. Great prices. Warm environment. You need to check out this low key restaurant in the heart of Warminster.
Open for breakfast and lunch. Weekend specials. And you can get ice cream ALL DAY! What more could you want?! Owned and run by the Nunez family, theirs is a business where everyone pulls their own weight with a smile. That smile is shared with the diners.
Check out Angy’s Cafe. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Ice cream served ’til closing at 9pm. And remember to tell them you heard about them in the Uptight Suburbanite but PLEASE! Don’t tell them I ate my FULL serving of my LARGE ice cream!! LOL!!
See you next month….
