So here we are in the middle of a really hot sports season. At this writing, Philadelphia is “ablaze” with great teams,
and as the good fans that we are, we’ve thrown ourselves into a cheering frenzy!!!
Fortunately, we’re blessed with a lot of places to go and share that “Philly Camaraderie” on game day. Bars, restaurants, there are many watering holes set up with televisions (of all dimensions! LOL!!) to satisfy our viewing requirements. I checked out one of those local “watering holes” that is both diner and sports fan-friendly. Recommended by a lady friend, I was pleasantly surprised.
Terry kept saying “The food is great here.” And as the rest of our group arrived, they all had the same exclamation….”The food is great here!.” These women were not into sports, so I don’t think they appreciated the televisions and big bar in the center of the restaurant. The whole “sports thing” was secondary. The “food thing” was primary! P.S. They were right…. The food is great!
Walking in to Crafty’s Taproom on N. York Road, you don’t feel like you’re waking in to a bar. For me, with certain bar-sensitivities, this was a good thing. I like that it’s open, with good seating around the perimeter of the restaurant and a large bar/counter set up in the center. Again, for me it was very friendly.
Terry is a wine drinker….a chardonnay is a very affordable $6. Other drinks, including beer were also budget friendly. Several of the ladies like their Jalapeno Margarita. Don’t ask me! I had a Sam Adams….. I was driving!!!!
As this was my first time at Crafty’s, I asked the server for recommendations of their most popular menu items. My dining partners were right on the mark. For starters we got Crab Balls, Bavarian Pretzels and a spicey Chicken Dip. We probably could have stopped with these apps. The Crab Balls were delicious; very hefty, no breading, all crab AND we could share one order between us. The pretzels were fun, especially as we had the spicey dip. But no, I was determined to get a broader “view’ of this Taproom.
I shared the Blackened Chicken Sandwich with one of my new buddies. (I was saving room for the cheese fries and dessert!!) My sandwich was substantial and satisfying. Or as my friend Terry, would say, “It was delicious.” And it was! Terry ordered a BLT sandwich. It was HUGE and packed with well done bacon. Just as she had ordered. Someone else ordered the French Dip. HUGE!!! Really HUGE. She needed a doggy bag to take home half of it. Next to me, someone ordered a Pulled Pork sandwich. Again, very substantial. She said it was delicious and up to her picky standards…. The cheese fries were good, and finished by the end of the meal!!
Our server was very attentive. Replenishing our drinks, removing plates, stopping by to check in. We were happy with everything. Of course, two of us were “newbies.” The other four ladies were repeat diners and saw their expectations met per usual.
We finished off our meal with cheesecake…We didn’t need it, but my buddies followed me when I said a meal isn’t a meal without dessert!!
We arrived at Crafty’s around 4pm on a Sunday. It definitely filled up while we were dining. Couples at tables, the counter around the bar…. You could feel the chatter of people enjoying both their friendship and, of course, the good food. Funny, as I’m writing this, I believe someone once told me that the best food comes from a “bar.” They might be correct… It deserves further investigation!!
The food is definitely worth re-visiting…. And the ambiance…. Well, it’s a neighborhood thing. How nice is that!! Check out Crafty’s Taproom. Parking is convenient. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Just remember, it definitely fills up around game time. Be prepared!!
