FALL BACK IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME

Is your New Year’s resolution this year to get your home organized? The home is the heart of the family and this month is a great time to get organized so you can fall back in love with it. In order to successfully eliminate clutter in your home, you need to work together.

Have you found yourself nagging your spouse, significant other or roommate until you are red in the face to no avail? Are you frustrated when it comes to trying to get them on the same page in order to organize your home? Even though we do not like being nagged, we sometimes tend to think that nagging works well on others. Experience has taught us, however, that it just doesn’t work. It just drives a larger wedge in between us and that person.

There is an easier way, one in which you actually get a willing partner to help you be more organized. Although I refer to a spouse throughout this article, this can apply to anyone you live with. Here are a few tips to help get them on the same organizing page:
*Do Your Own Thing – Don’t worry about decluttering or organized your spouse’s things. Begin the process of organizing your own things first.

*Resist The Urge To Organize Your Spouse – Give your spouse the opportunity to do their own organizing. Be specific about what they should focus on. You can focus on items around the house that your spouse doesn’t particularly care about. Work together and when your spouse
supports you in your organizing efforts, reinforce their efforts by thanking them.

*If It’s Jointly Owned, Make A Joint Decision – When you are decluttering items that aren’t specifically yours, get an agreement from your spouse that it’s okay to donate or trash them. If they don’t want to get rid of a large collection, see if they will reduce the collection down to a
reasonable amount.

*Ask Your Spouse’s Advice – As you are decluttering items from your home, from time to time ask your spouse if they think an item is worthy of donating or if it should be thrown away or recycled. Asking your spouse if you can bounce some ideas off of them gives them the sense that their opinion matters. You might be surprised by the outcome. Another perspective might lead you to another solution that will work better.
